-19.8.1968, Boulder, pieces of Colorado), American physicist.
Finished Leningrad university (1926). In 1928-31 it worked
in Gettingene, Copenhagen, Cambridge. In 1931-33 in the Physico-
tech. institute in Leningrad. In 1933 it emigrated first to
France, then to England. From 1934 - in THE USA. In
1934-56 Prof. of the university J. Washington in Washington, from 1956
universities in Colorado. G. gave the first quantum -vomexanic.
explanation of alpha decay. Made a significant contribution to
the theory of beta decay (contemporary with 3. Heller). In 1946
it advanced the hypothesis of the "hot universe" (see cosmology).
