Admixtures hamper the transport of gas and are the reason for the corrosion of conduits, thrombosis (partial or complete) of bore holes, trains and trade equipment as a result of the formation of the plugs of hydrates or ice (see hydrate formation). Form g. s. is cylindrical (horizontal and vertical).

G. s., as a rule, have the separative sections: osn separative (for the department of the larger part of the liquid from the gas flow): precipitating, in which the admixtures are separated under the action of the forces of the gravity: the final cleaning of gas (from the smallest drops of liquid): for the collection and the preliminary sediment of liquid. G. s. are divided according to the type osn of separative device into the gravitational, the cyclonic (centrifugal) and the adapter; on the clause of the collection of liquid - with the extension the collection and with collection, find in the volume g. s. the operating principle gravitational g. s. is based on reduction in the gas velocity in them to such value, with which the admixtures settle under the action of gravitational force and periodically they are discarded in proportion to accumulation. In cyclonic g. s. the separation of admixtures occurs under the action of centrifugal forces. With the equal with the gravitational effectiveness cyclonic g. s. they possess larger capacity, less metal-consuming and have smaller overall dimensions. Most effective are n A- charging g. s., in which the department of liquid is achieved in essence under the action of the inertial forces.

The increasing application on the fatherlands, gas trades obtain jalousied g. s., which make it possible to separate liquid in the form of film, which increases the effectiveness of the screen separators to 95-97%. See also gases cleaning.
