interfluve of the Prut, Sireta and Danube. Pl. 4,4
thousand. km2. Us. 495,8 thousand man. (1968), in
Vol. h. urban 46%. Adm Q - g. Galatz. It is located preim. in the E. part of the
lower-Danube plain (lowlands of B3r3- Ghana). Industry is
connected mainly with the processing by local agr. of the production:
mukom. and plodokonservnoye production, wine making
(especially in To liyeshti, To nikoreshti). More diverse nature
has an industry Galatz. In s. economy predominates grain
direction (corn, wheat, fig); from the tech. cultures there are
sowings of sunflower, SAKh of beet; vegetable-growing.
On s. of district vineyards. Sheep breeding, mainly
fine-wooled species. Fishing - on Danube.
