(Wolfe) Thomas Clayton (3.10. 1900, Ashvill,
-15.9.1938, Baltimore), American Writer. Son of engraver on the
stone. Finished university pcs the North Carolina. Its
novels "be wrapped up to the house, angel" (1929), "about the time and
the river" (1935) and the publ. it is posthumous "cobweb and cliff"
(1939) and "to you not to return home" (1940) they sketch the
collision of hero with the peace of petty-bourgeois stagnation and
mercantilism. Following demokratich. Of u. Whitman's tradition,
v. glorified America toiler- creators. Lyrical saturation and at
the same time epich. latitude distinguish the collections of short
stories v. ("from death to the dawn", 1935, "there, after the hills",
1941).
